|_____________by Dave Jones_____________|
-1. RAPID TEXT EDITING IS POSSIBLE IF YOU USE /
-the powerful commands built into this versa- /
-tile, integrated program. REMEMBER the pro- /
-gram is AppleWORKS, not ApplePLAY. You paid -
+dearly for this software; make it WORK for /
-you. Consult your AW manual or supplemental /
-manual--there are many excellent ones on the /
-market--and you'll gain even more understan- ,
*ding and knowledge about this program and !
how to use it more effectively.,
* Entering text into an AppleWorks (AW) -
+word processing document is as easy as ty- ,
*ping. However, rapid editing of text re- /
-quires speedy cursor movement and other use-
ful editing commands of AW.,
* When entering text, use the DELETE key -
+sparingly. Use the OA-D (Open Apple-D for -
+delete) combination instead. Then use OA- .
,left or -right arrow to highlight the words ,
*to be deleted. When deleting one line or .
,several lines, use the up or down arrows to ,
*highlight the lines to be deleted. High- .
,light entire lines; remove unneeded portion +
)of highlight bar using the OA-left or OA +
)-right arrows wherever possible. You'll #
you'll pick up additional speed .,
* If you've entered an idea too early in .
,your document and it's in your way, MOVE it ,
*to the end of your document with the OA-M +
)command (just follow the prompts). Then .
,separate it from the portion of text you're *
(working on with 3 or 4 carriage returns *
(<CR>. When you've reached the correct *
(point in your text, delete the <CR>s to %
rejoin the idea with the main body.*
( Use the OA-1 through OA-9 command to .
,scroll rapidly from the start (OA-1) to the +
)end (OA-9) of your document. (This also .
,works in the DATA BASE program.) To scroll ,
*one screen (20 lines) up or down, use the -
OA-up arrow or OA-down arrow combination.
,If you scroll the cursor to the top or bot- /
-tom of the screen as needed, you'll never be ,
*more than 10 vertical lines away from the
line you want to edit. ,
* Once on the correct line, then use the +
)OA-left or -right arrow to move one word /
-rather than one letter per press. Of course ,
*you can continue to depress the arrow key /
-and the cursor will scroll smoothly across a -
line. (One more plug for MacroWorks which /
-enables one to jump the cursor to the begin- $
ning or end of any selected line.).
, If you're a slow typist as I am, use the +
)OA-M (MOVE) command wherever possible to -
+save words and phrases instead of deleting .
,them only to retype them later. This saves /
-time in editing, particularly when paragraph .
needs rearranging for clarity or continuity./
- Cutting and pasting in AW is really elec- /
-tronic copying to the clipboard, a temporary .
,holding file in RAM, and then inserting the -
+text elsewhere in your current document or ,
*to another word processing document. For .
,example, the border which precedes this ar- /
-ticle was typed only once, but it's been cut .
,and pasted many times. Using the clipboard /
-is clearly one of the most powerful features /
-of AW and one that the user should be famil-
iar with..
, The clipboard will enable one to combine /
-several files into a single file, many Apple ,
*tidbits into a single article. Just load /
-the files to the desktop, use OA-Q to select /
-the files from which portions of text are to .
,be cut, then the files to which the text is #
to be pasted using the clipboard.
+2. PRINT THREE-ACROSS LABELS WITH THIS TIP .
,from Judith Classen of Albuquerque NM which .
,was published in "inCider", Nov 86, p. 10. -
+Using the technique outlined below one can /
-print labels 2 or 3 across a page instead of *
(single labels. Even if you don't print .
,mailing labels using this tip, it's a great .
,way to consolidate your listing on a single &
page. Just follow these directions./
- Bring up existing data base OR set up new ,
*data base and enter information. Arrange /
-the data in the order you desire. Save as a -
+temporary ASCII file. Do this by printing +
)the file to disk by typing OA-P and then /
-selecting option 3 on the report menu, "cre- .
ate a new label format." Then enter a name %
Continued...........
,for the new report. When Report Format ap- -
+pears, don't bother to change the categor- .
,ies. Continue by pressing OA-P; select the /
-ASCII file (option 4) rather than your prin- +
)ter. Enter a pathname for your file and -
+print the data base to the temporary ASCII
file on disk..
, Return to the main menu and create a new -
+file for the data base. Select "Add files +
)to desktop" (option 1); then select Data .
,Base (option 4); then select Option 2 (From .
,a text (ASCII file)). When the prompt asks +
)for the categories per record, enter the /
-number that is three times what you need for /
-each label (18 if each label is comprised of ,
*6 categories). Type the pathname for the /
-temporary ASCII file just created, then name -
+your new data base THREE.NAMES (or similar
name)..
, Press OA-P to bring up the report menu. -
+Create a new "labels" format, and name the ,
*report LABELS.3X. When Report Format ap- .
,pears, move the categories so the three la- .
,bels contained in the 18 categories will be /
-arranged properly across the top of the page -
+(6 categories per label). When you've ar- .
,ranged the categories with appropriate spa- *
(cing and selected your printer options, '
print the file as you normally would.,
* This method may sound complicated, but /
-it's really quite simple. The added conven- *
(ience and compactness of printing three .
,labels across a page (or on labels) is well
worth the few extra steps.
(3. PRINTING MULTIPLE COPIES OF A SINGLE (
&label is easy once you set up printer .
,options. This tip deals with printing down ,
*one columns of labels using the data base *
(programs in AppleWorks and sheets of 3X ,
*labels. To print individual labels using +
)standard 3-across, 2.5"x.93" labels, use ,
*these LM values: 0.3 inches for the left +
)label, 3.0 inches for the center label. /
-Print the left column, turn the printer off, ,
*roll the sheet out of the printer, insert *
(the sheet again and print on the center ,
*labels. To print on the right label just
invert the sheet of labels. .
, NEVER, NEVER try to roll labels back. A ,
*label can easily become detached from the /
-sheet and stick to the rollers and underside -
+of the printer platen. It's a frustrating .
,job to remove the parts of the printer that ,
hold the platen in place, remove the stuck
,labels and then use a solvent to remove the /
-residual adhesive. That's why I say, NEVER, '
NEVER roll labels back in the platen.-
+ Just in case your printer automatically +
)calls for a form feed, i.e., the printer ,
*advances the remainder of a full 11" page /
-length (66 vertical spaces) when it finishes )
'printing anything (even it the text is -
+limited to a sentence or two), you'll want /
-to set up a "CUSTOM PRINTER". It can be any ,
*printer including your ImageWriter. Just ,
*specify "no form feed" in the menu of op- ,
*tions. Look up pertinent printer options .
,and furnish them when prompted, i.e., prin- ,
*ter string codes for CI, underline, bold, /
-etc.. Then when you specify a 1" (one-inch) ,
*page length, your printer will merely ad-
vance to next label. .
, Once you enter the options for the file, /
-save it to your disk. Recall it anytime you -
+need single labels or multiple copies of a .
,single label. Edit records (labels) in the .
,file as required, indicate number of copies .
,required and print. Be certain to select a /
-single record. Multiple copies can be prin- -
+ted after printing a single label to check )
margin settings and vertical alignment.-
+ Yes, this is another useful application -
+of AW and I'm sorry to say it took me more .
,than a year of working with AW to figure it
out.
+ 4. USE WP AS MINI DATA BASE PROGRAM AND +
)search for text using the OA-(F)IND com- .
,mand of AppleWorks. If tips and techniques .
,require more paper than you have file space /
-and if you can never find them when you need !
them, here's a tip you can use.*
( Create a word processing document by .
,typing in the various AW tips from numerous -
+sources; they will be easy to locate using /
-the OA-F command. After you type in the tip ,
*or technique, precede it with several key 0
.words that can be used to index the program. ,
*You can add new tips as you find them and /
-scan the entire document in seconds. If you +
)find an article you want to print, just *
(copy it to the clipboard, open up a new ,
*temporary file, copy the article from the /
-clipboard and then print it! If the article /
-is no more than one screenful, you can print .
,it with the OA-H command. So simple and so $
fast with the power of AppleWorks!
